Castle Rock Trail

Castle Rock Trail is one of Big Bear's most iconic hikes, offering a rewarding 2.7-mile round-trip trek to a stunning granite rock formation that towers above the valley floor. The trail gains approximately 700 feet in elevation and is rated as moderate, making it accessible to most hikers while still providing a satisfying workout.

The trail begins with a gentle climb through a beautiful pine and oak forest before steepening as it approaches the rocky summit. Along the way, hikers are treated to wildflower displays in spring and early summer, and the forest provides welcome shade during warmer months. The final approach involves some light scrambling over granite boulders, adding an element of adventure to the hike.

At the top, hikers are rewarded with spectacular 360-degree views of Big Bear Lake, the San Bernardino Mountains, and on clear days, views stretching all the way to the desert floor. The massive granite formations at the summit are perfect for photos and make a great spot to rest and enjoy a snack before heading back down. Early morning and late afternoon offer the best lighting and cooler temperatures.
